Requirements for obtaining tissue and data

All researchers who wish to obtain tissue and data from The Brain Collection must be approved by the Research Committee of The Brain Collection, a sub-committee under The Brain Collection Steering Group, and meet the legal and/or institutional requirements.

Danish applicants
For researchers in Denmark who wish to obtain tissue from The Brain Collection, an ethical approval from your Regional Scientifics Committee is required. If you only wish to obtain data from The Brain Collection, an ethical approval from a Danish University ethics committee is required.

The data and tissue is not governed by the EU General Data Protection Regulation, because data in The Brain Collection are from people who have been deceased for more than 10 years.

Foreign applicants
For researchers outside Denmark who wish to obtain tissue or data from The Brain Collection, an ethical approval is required. The ethical approval must be in accordance with the legal and institutional rules which governs research in the applicant's country and institution.

Application
You must apply The Brain Collection via the online application form, this may be done prior to obtaining ethical approval. If you do so and your application is approved by the research committee, you must submit the ethnical approval when it is obtained and prior to transfer of tissue or data.

Legal agreements
Prior to transferring tissue and data to your project, legal agreements must be signed. Which will depend on the set-up of the project. For transfer alone an MTA (material transfer agreement) will be drawn up by the Brain Collection stating terms and conditions.

For research collaboration a research collaboration agreement will be drawn up by The Brain Collection, stating terms and conditions.

Costs
In general it is free of charge to obtain tissue and data from The Brain Collection for public research, your project will merely have to cover the costs of transfer / shipping.
